Installing the Wine Barrel |
Here we go again! The barrel ends are in along with the middle ‘bending brace’ which has the ends cut off so we can get around it. Tight, space, as you will see… The staves go on! It is re-emerging as a barrel! Finally! Tight quarters require tight design guidelines! We had approximately one inch from the barrel braces to the side wall of the structure. This area will be accessible from access holes hidden above and behind the barrel. The main structural beam above had to be drilled to allow room for pipes that otherwise just would not fit. All’s well that ends well! We are finally ready for the finishing touches! First all the trim will go on and then the barrel rungs and the end trim caps. Since the barrel is about 6 times the scale of an actual wine barrel the trim caps are over 6 inches wide. Each cap has a taper from front to back, an angle cut on the front to ‘mate’ with the staves and a bevel on the sides! I dreamed up this idea but sure am glad I didn’t have to install them! Having a great craftsman like Ben makes all the difference in a project of this magnitude! Thanks Ben! The end cap trim pieces hide the metal attachment system that holds all the stave assemblies to the end cap. How did he do it! |
